Shadows are but the flip side of the sun. We cast them because we are fully human and beings of Light. They are reflections of beauty – and have a stark loveliness of their own.

Those who fear the shadow are, in effect, denying themselves half of the human experience, condemning themselves to the unrealistic and unobtainable glitter of permanent gold.

The image above – taken in Scotland in early January – shows clearly how the texture of our world is built up of both light and shade. It also shows that the contrast between shadow and nature enriches and enhances the final effect.

I have felt overwhelmed by shadows for much of this week. But this prompt has been a salutary reminder of the vital part the shadow plays in all of our lives.

I salute the shadow!
